A Couple Got Married After Meeting on Mafia Wars

You know Mafia Wars? The Facebook app that you blocked like a year ago when it started clogging up your newsfeed? Well, it turns out that the app does more than help people live out their fantasies of murdering each other – it sometimes helps people find love. John Sweeney and Joanne Doane met each other online while playing Mafia Wars and are now married. Games.com has an interview with the newlyweds:

Aside from your mob-themed cake, what other elements of Mafia Wars made their way into the ceremony?

We gave everyone toy water guns and knives and everyone had fun attacking each other. They even attacked the bad karaoke singers as that was the going. All in all, good clean fun.

 

Now that the two of you are finally together and made your “Mafia Wars Love Connection” complete, how have your playing habits changed? 
They haven’t changed one bit. We are still doing the same thing we always did only now we do it as husband and wife.

 

How do you manage running your own Mafia Wars clan, Mafia Wars True Alliance, together?
We seem to find a good balance as we each take responsibility and realize it it not just about us, but it is about the thousands of members and making sure they have fun and are safe. Over all we have a good staff and everyone works well together and our almost 8000 members seems to be happy as well as our allies so we must be doing something right.

Some Thoughts On “Sex By Surprise”

Interesting blog about the latest buzz in the air: the Julian Assange "rape affair" on Jezebel: 

"Commentators are saying Julian Assange didn't rape anyone, and these are trumped-up charges of "sex by surprise," which means that Assange didn't wear a condom and days later the women he slept with are claiming rape. Totally unfair, right?

Well, no, I'm not sure it's that straightforward. The actual details of what happened are hard to come by, and are largely filtered through tabloid sources that are quick to offer crucial facts like the hair color of the women (blonde) and the clothes they wore (pink, tight), but it sounds like the sex was consensual on the condition that a condom was used. 

It also sounds like in one case, condom use was negotiated for and Assange agreed to wear a condom but didn't, and the woman didn't realize it until after they had sex; in the second case, it sounds like the condom broke and the woman told Assange to stop, which he did not. This is of course speculation based on the bare-bones reported description of events, but it's at least clear that "this is a case of a broken condom" isn't close to the whole story. (It's also worth pointing out that the charge is actually a quite minor one in Sweden, and the punishment is a $700 fine)."

Melissa Petro: The point of my blog post was to criticize Craigslist for shutting down its adult-services section amid concerns that it enabled prostitution and exploitation of women. I argued that for all the victims in the adult-services section, there were a considerable number of people who chose sex work of their own free will, as I had done in college and grad school, to earn a little money. Prostitution is a far from perfect occupation — I will be the first to admit that — but it is an occupation, and it is an occupation that many individuals choose.

I disclosed my history because I think if you’re going to state an opinion, you ought to back it up with your credentials. A lot of people have such strong opinions about sex work and yet they have no experience or personal knowledge whatsoever. I don’t claim to be an expert on anything other than my own experience. I’ve been a stripper and I sold sex. I also conducted interviews with sex workers across Europe and in the United States--this research became my undergraduate thesis at Antioch College."

Why Are Men Always Expected to Make the First Move in Sex and Relationships?

Everything we do romantically is shaped by gendered scripts; in American scripts, men are usually handed the responsibility of initiating dates or sexual encounters.

Being rejected sucks. Let me tell you about my first experience with it. Like me, the object of my desire was 13 years old, and he was the hottest thing ever -- a geek who loved the natural sciences. He seemed like an awesome match for an Internet-obsessed nerd girl with weird pets. Sadly, he responded to my overture by saying that I could shove one of my pets up my ass. I can laugh about this now, but it sure sucked in my teens, and gave me a complex about asking guys out that lasted through my 20s. Like just about everyone in the world, I know about the pain of rejection.

But I know how the receiving end can get, too. I grew up into a woman who -- like many women -- routinely manages unwanted advances from men. Some of those advances are not made with good intent, like the guys who shout gross comments at me in the street. Yet at the same time as that kind of deliberately invasive behavior is going on, there are also people of all genders trying to initiate real, mutual romantic relationships -- often misstepping even when their partner is receptive, and often experiencing very sad rejections.

Voting leads to orgasm?

"Spanish politicians have criticised a video by the Young Socialists in Catalonia in which a woman simulates an orgasm while casting her vote.

Both Socialist and opposition politicians have attacked the campaign video.

The equality minister called it "misleading" advertising.

In the video the young woman gets increasingly excited as she votes for the Socialist Party in this month's regional elections in Catalonia.

It concludes with the phrase, "Voting is a pleasure", after she puts her voting slip in the ballot box.

The leader of the conservative opposition Popular Party of Catalonia, Alicia Sanchez-Camacho, said the video was an "attack on the dignity of women".

The health minister, Leire Pajin, who is a Socialist, called on all parties to show respect for women and to act responsibly.

The Socialist equality minister, Bibiana Aido, said of the video: "If it was true, electoral participation would go up greatly, but I think we are dealing with a misleading advert."

Exlusive interview with Mikella, webcam model

Students Turning to Prostitution and Stripping

There are many avenues for students engaging in sex work could to assure their own safety.

  

“After doing massage therapy for a while, I am now working as an escort full-time. I see two to three clients a day. Seventy-five per cent of my clients are kinkier and twenty-five per cent want vanilla sex or massage with orgasms.”

This is how a Canadian male student, who wishes to remain anonymous, describes how he started to consider sex work earlier this year to raise funds to attend a midwifery school in New Zealand. As a massage therapist working in Vancouver (one of Canada's most liberal cities) who identifies as “sex positive” and sexually experimental, he found the transition to working as an escort “pretty natural.”

“The work is what you make it,” he says. “I find it really rewarding to help clients explore their sexuality.”

He is part of a number of students who have taken work in the sex industry as a source of income. “Participation in sex work: students’ views,” a UK study published in May 2010 by the journal Sex Education, found that 16.5 percent of undergraduate students would consider working in the sex industry and that 93 per cent identified money as one of their main motivations. The same study found that 11 percent would consider taking a job as an escort.

Lohan won't play porn star

Lindsay Lohan won't be playing 1970s porn star Linda Lovelace in Inferno.

Writer-director Matthew Wilder says his production team is in negotiations with another actress and will make an announcement soon.

Some media reports say the 24-year-old starlet quit to focus on her court-ordered rehab for drug addiction; others say Wilder wanted her replaced.

The Mean Girls star is expected to be in rehab in southern California until at least January 3.

The actress has become more of a tabloid mainstay than box office draw since a pair of high-profile arrests in 2007 led to a drug and drunken driving case. A judge last month ordered Lohan to rehab.

It was her fifth time in court since May. The ruling allowed her to avoid a fourth trip to jail.

The porn that women want

Research commissioned by the Playboy channel found that women, especially younger ones, are open to watching porn if it features "real chemistry, nonenhanced body parts, varied body shapes and 'contextualized' sex. Not everyone agrees.

As for what "contextualized" means, the researcher who conducted the focus groups and "other research" used to draw this conclusion said women "want the romance to flow organically from the story and not pop up in a forced fashion as is the case in so many adult movies."

The Playboy Channel is interpreting this as a chance to remake itself with couples-oriented programming, under the banner TV For 2. That means six new shows with higher production values and more "docu-reality."

Few would quibble with "real chemistry" and more representation of natural bodies, but the idea that women like storylines and hand-holding can grate on some porn-loving women. Just last week, in the first of Fleshbot's Porn For Straight Girls posts, where Sailor Ripley declared, "What I, token Straight Girl, want out of porn: something hot, heavy, and funny to boot. It's not about an overwrought story that happens to have a lot of sex; it's primarily about the fucking."

The commenters on that post, asked to describe what they wanted out of porn, mostly corroborated the findings of the Playboy study, with a little less focus on narrative or context. A sampling:
For me, the most important thing is that everyone is authentically enjoy themselves. That's why I don't watch a lot of professional porn, especially featuring women - I can't always tell if they're actually enjoying themselves, and that bothers me.
I don't really care about the acting, but porn where both people are clearly actually getting off is always the best. Hearing a guy moan? Awesome. Creampies that don't end in a guy jacking it at the "vaginal precipice," but rather like what happens in real life? Awesome. Seeing that red flush in a woman's breasts and face because she's so close to orgasm? Awesome.

FRISKY students discovered a new way to entertain themselves — by projecting 30ft-high PORN images on to buildings.

A group of youngsters from Bournemouth University, Dorset, projected the x-rated video on the wall of an opposing halls of residence, covering four whole floors.

The video featured a curvy blonde woman stripping before engaging in a steamy romp with a dark haired man.

And if the images weren't enough to grab the attention of passers-by, the group also used a monster stereo system to play out the booming moans and groans for everyone to hear.

One of the jokers revealed the prank started during a quiet night in watching films in their halls of residence called Purbeck House in Bournemouth town centre.

He said: "We were watching a non porn film and thought: 'I wonder if we could get it on the other building?'

Flirting can be more than fun, researchers say

There is a lot more to flirting than fun, according to a new research study that says finding success in romance depends in part on understanding your own personal "flirting style.

Whether or not you prefer sidling up to a stranger in a bar or you'd rather sit back and wait for an object of attraction to approach are distinctions that once recognized can help people navigate the rocky seas of relationships, according to Jeffrey Hall, assistant professor of communication studies at the University of Kansas.

Hall recently completed a study into styles of flirting among dating adults, surveying more than 5,100 people regarding their methods of communicating romantic interest.

"Knowing something about the way you communicate attraction says something about challenges you might have had in your past dating life," Hall said. "Hopefully, this awareness can help people avoid those mistakes and succeed in courtship."

Hall said there are essentially five styles of flirting: physical, traditional, polite, sincere and playful.

In physical flirting, people express their sexual interest in a potential partner and, he says, often quickly can develop the relationships, have more sexual chemistry and have a greater emotional connection to their partners.

Traditional flirts tend to believe that men should make the first moves, with women assuming more passive roles. Both sexes comfortable with this style seem to prefer more "intimate" dating scenes,, he said.

There are many people whose flirting styles fall into the category of "playful" and are aimed largely at enhancing their own self-esteem, Hall said. These people are less likely to have lasting and meaningful relationships, he added.

"In some ways, the very early part of developing relationships is important to the success of long-term relationships, including marriages," he said.

Hall co-authored the article with Steve Carter, senior director of research and product development at online dating site eHarmony.com; and other researchers.

Sri Lanka launches porn star man-hunt

Sri Lankan newspapers have published pictures of people police said had acted in locally produced pornographic films, part of a court-ordered crackdown and the latest sign of growing social conservatism.

Police have identified 83 people they say have acted in the films found on websites, and got a court order to have media outlets publish their pictures to help locate the suspects.

"This is illegal and we need them to be identified for investigations," police spokesman Priyashanth Jayakody said.

The move is part of a crackdown on pornography in the Indian Ocean nation of 21 million.

The Telecommunication Regulatory Commission has already blocked about 100 pornography sites and police have been arresting people with porn on their mobile phones.

Sri Lanka is a Buddhist majority nation, which also has Hindus, Muslims and Christians, and traditional values and more liberal social norms have generally co-existed well during its modern history.

But there have been growing signs of conservatism. There is a movement within a faction of president Mahinda Rajapaksa's government to ban alcohol, which has been resisted by the tourist industry which stands to lose revenue as it is rebuilding after the end of a three-decade civil war.

In March, Sri Lanka refused a visa to the Senegalese-American R&B singer and rapper Akon to perform in Colombo after Buddhists protested over a video in which he appeared briefly showed scantily clad women dancing in front of a Buddha statue.
